TRREB Applauds Provincial Planning Statement for Advancing Housing Supply and Affordability
The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB) welcomes the newly released 2024 Ontario Provincial Planning Statement (PPS) as another step forward in addressing the pressing need for increased housing supply and improved affordability across the province.
TRREB strongly supports the enhanced focus on transit-oriented development and higher-density housing around major transit hubs, a move that will significantly boost housing availability in high-demand areas while promoting sustainable urban growth. By mandating higher densities in these key locations, this will accelerate much-needed housing and also make more efficient use of existing infrastructure, ultimately benefiting both homebuyers and renters. TRREB is a continued advocate for transit-oriented communities and is pleased to see the province doubling down on more homes near transit hubs.
We are encouraged to see the streamlining of the PPS. In the 2024 PPS, the province has reduced both its length and complexity. A leaner and more streamlined 2024 PPS will make it easier and less costly for planning officials to adopt the new rules into their planning document.
TRREB supports the 2024 PPS commitment to building more homes on underused low-density lands, such as shopping plazas, malls and brownfields. These lands are often in highly desirable areas of a city or town that require additional municipal support to make development projects feasible. By turning underused lands into housing, we can meet our supply targets faster and help more families attain a place to call home.
We look forward to continuing to work with all levels of government to ensure these policy changes are implemented effectively and help in creating a more affordable and accessible housing market for all Ontarians.
